The city of Oxnard, which was incorporated in 1903, is currently the largest city in Ventura County. It runs right along the pacific coastline and is 35 miles south of Santa Barbara and 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

One of the most desirable things about Oxnard is it’s extremely fertile soil. That, coupled with the temperate climate and the long harvest season, make Oxnard an extremely agricultural rich area. Farmers can often get double, even triple, the amount of crops harvested on the same piece of land per year.

Originally, the economy used to be based on oil and agricultural almost exclusively. However, the economy in Oxnard has grown along with the city. It all started off by cattle grazing and farming sugar beets/beans. Intensive farming followed shortly after. A strange twist was the shift from intensive farming to working in the defence industry. Nowadays, the city is concentrating on developing commercial, industrial, and housing opportunities. Oxnard prides itself on keeping an even balance between honouring their agricultural background but still progressing further into the fields of technology and business.

Oxnard has gone through a population boom in the last fifty years. Although this has provided challenges to the government, it has also been a blessing because it has created exceptional opportunities for young entrepreneurs to start up businesses,

The top employers in the city are in biotechnology, duplicating and packaging videocassettes, education, health insurance, mortgage lending, and telephone services and equipment. The governments (local, state, and federal) also hire a large percent of the population. Because of its ideal location close to Highway 101, the city is attracting many high-technology industries. The Port of Hueneme, which loads, unloads and sends fruit and cars overseas, is very important to the economy. Point Mugu and Port Hueneme are also home to a large portion of the United States Navy.
